It's rare when I encounter metaphors that become literal.
"It's so cold it takes my breath away" is one of those. And yet, this morning it was quite, quite cold by Bay Area standards and it did indeed take my breath away for a moment.
There's a strange kind of silence that accompanies a cold, cloudless morning that gives it a certain eerie quality. I personally find this a bit disorienting. I wasn't sure it was Wednesday until I came into the office and looked at a calendar.
